Sometimes business success and the other things that we spend so much time focussing on are just not the most important things to be thinking about …
I’ve just finished my fifth Ride To Conquer Cancer – a 220 Km ride, over two days, to remember those lost to cancer, celebrate the survivors and raise much needed funds for ongoing cancer research.
Weather-wise it was a horrible weekend, yet 900 hundred riders still braved thunderstorms, torrential rain and crazy winds to raise over $4m dollars. Again, I am humbled by the contribution and sense of community of the riders and the amazing volunteers supporting the event. I am most inspired by those people riding with a yellow flag, cancer survivors now doing their bit.
Every year on the ride, I am reminded that some things just matter more than business and profit.
Some things that really matter – community, concern for others, contribution with no expectation of anything in return, courage in the face of adversity, recognising that every single person we meet is facing their own challenges.
As leaders, we can focus on the material things, or on the things that matter! It’s a leadership choice!
Thank you to everyone who did something that mattered this weekend.
